Vattenfall and BASF have signed a contract with Vestas to supply turbines for the 1600MW Nordlicht offshore wind cluster in the German North Sea.
The Danish manufacturer has been lined up to supply 112 V236-15.0MW turbines to both phases of the project 85km north of the island of Borkum.
Vattenfall’s decision to go for the turbines for the 980MW first phase was reported by subscriber-only reNEWS on 11 January.
Vestas northern and central Europe president Nils de Baar said: “We are pleased to have signed this conditional agreement to supply our state-of-the-art offshore wind turbine for the Nordlicht projects.
“Vattenfall, BASF and Vestas share the goal of rapidly scaling up wind projects and decarbonizing the energy market in Europe. Nordlicht will play a crucial role in achieving Germany’s energy transition goals. Vattenfall has a lot of experience with offshore wind projects and we look forward to building this project together with our partners.”
Vattenfall head of offshore added: “Wind energy is an essential cornerstone on the path to fossil-free energy that drives society forward.
With Vestas, we now have a partner for our Nordlicht projects with whom we share the same values when it comes to sustainable energy solutions.
The supply contract for the wind turbines is an important milestone for us and we look forward to continuing to work with Vestas as one of the leading wind turbine manufacturers. In doing so, we are further expanding our fossil-free production in Germany and at the same time setting an example for the European wind industry.”
The construction of Nordlicht 1 and 2 is scheduled to start in 2026. According to the current state of planning, the wind turbines are to be installed in 2027 (Nordlicht 1) and 2028 (Nordlicht 2).
The wind farms are expected to be fully operational in 2028.
