Vattenfall has committed to construction of the 92.4MW Aberdeen offshore wind farm off northeast Scotland for £300m.
The Swedish utility acquired the 25% stake in the project previously controlled by Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group ahead of the final investment decision.
Contractors include MHI Vestas, which will supply 11 beefed-up 8.4MW versions of its V164 turbine, Boskalis as turnkey offshore contractor and J Murphy for onshore works.
Construction of what is also called the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre will kick off later this year onshore near Blackdog with offshore works kicking off late 2017.
The wind farm is scheduled for first power in spring 2018.
Vattenfall head of wind Gunnar Groebler said the project “underlines our long-term ambition to grow our wind power capacity, including in the UK”.
He added: “We are confident that the new UK and Scottish governments will continue to support growth in offshore wind as the industry lowers the cost of energy significantly.”
Scotland Energy Minister Paul Wheelhouse said: “This project will keep our nation at the forefront of innovation by allowing energy companies to identify new ways to reduce operating costs.”
