Vestas has put its planned manufacturing assembly facility in Japan on ice due to a lack of offshore turbine orders.
The Danish manufacturer said that the proposed nacelle factory had always been subject to successful customers bidding in offshore wind auctions and securing sufficient volume each year.
Vestas was planning to build the plant via a government-backed supply chain subsidy scheme, known as the Program for Promoting Investment in Japan to Strengthen Supply Chains.
Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry selected Vestas for the program last year, one of seven chosen companies offering offshore wind energy solutions.
A spokesperson for Vestas said it had submitted a notice withdrawing from the subsidy scheme in March this year, the deadline for the grant application, as there was “no prospect” of receiving orders in time.
He added that Vestas may still proceed with the plan after “reviewing the status of future orders and other factors”.
Vestas has installed 624MW of turbines in Japan since 1993.
