Teesside yard Wilton Engineering has shipped its initial load of transition pieces for Orsted’s 1.2GW Hornsea 1 wind farm off Yorkshire.
Wilton said four 340-tonne units produced in conjunction with Germany’s Steelwind Nordenham left north-east England this weekend and sailed to the project site for installation by GeoSea jack-up Innovation.
A further 17 components have been completed and are awaiting transportation to the load-out port of Seaton.
Initial can rolling for the pieces was tackled in Germany. Wilton blasted and coated the units before fitting them out with ladders and boat landing platforms. A portion of the work was tackled using the yard’s newly opened blast and paint shop.
Wilton chief executive Bill Scott (pictured) said: “It is testament to the capabilities and expertise of our workforce, along with our north-east supply chain, that we were able to secure this project and deliver it completely compliant to specifications.”
Scott said the government’s commitment to regular Contract for Difference auctions will help bring further investment to the north-east of the UK. “The region is well-placed to support the ongoing deployment of offshore wind as an essential part of the UK energy mix,” he added.
