WindEurope 2024: Euroports forges Finnish offshore deal

Euroports and Port of Hanko have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to establish a wind hub at the Finnish port.

This initiative positions the harbour, situated in Koverhad, in the southernmost part of the country, as a central place in the offshore wind supply chain, tackling the “critical issue” of providing ample and dedicated space.

Spanning 600 hectares of which 90 hectares will be dedicated to port activities, Koverhar Harbour is uniquely equipped to facilitate major wind turbine projects.

Port of Hanko chief executive Anders Ahlvik said: “Port of Hanko and especially Koverhar is a perfect harbour for the assembly and storage of wind turbine components.”

The partnership between Euroports and Hanko “sets the stage for Koverhar to become a pivotal network hub across the whole Baltic Sea region”.

The initiative is looking beyond the logistical challenges, to cultivate an entire green ecosystem within its considerable back-land area.

Euroports’ experience as a terminal operator, associated with a strong track record in both onshore and offshore wind industry, allows its teams to handle the full value chain, including freight forwarding through subsidiary Manuport Logistics.

“The Letter of Intent with the Port of Hanko enables us to expand our business in renewable energy,” said commercial director of Euroports Finland Petteri Sammalisto.

“By creating a unique wind hub here, we’re not just addressing the immediate needs of the wind energy sector; we’re fostering a sustainable ecosystem that will serve the Baltic region and beyond.”
