WPD has applied to build the 865MW Gennaker offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea.
The plans, first reported in this week’s issue of the subscriber-only newsletter reNEWS, include 103 Siemens SWT-8.0-154 turbines optimized to 8.4MW and two identical offshore substations.
The project, which will be located at a site 15km north of the Fischland-Darss-Zingst peninsula off the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is scheduled to be fully commissioned in 2022.
The site of the wind farm falls within a 185 square km nearshore area designated for offshore wind development earlier this year by the state government.
The regional environmental protection agency will consider the application.
The wind farm plans will be on display at the agency’s offices in Straslund from next week until 18 October.
Stakeholders will have until 1 November to submit comments, while a public hearing is scheduled for 14 December.
Rules due to come into effect in January mean Gennaker would be excluded from planned offshore wind tenders in 2017 and 2018, because only projects with permission hearings held before 1 August will be eligible.
However, WPD said it hopes that policymakers will extend the deadline to open the way for Baltic Sea proposals designated earlier this year.
