WPD offers O&M home comforts

EBSBy EBSSeptember 6, 20182 Mins Read

WPD company Borkum Hafen Immobilien is developing residential accommodation at the harbour on the island of Borkum for service staff working on offshore wind farms.

The company is working with Delugan Meissl Associated Architects and Nordseeheilbad Borkum on the quarters, which are being built on the northern and eastern bank of the island’s former naval harbour.

Construction is split into two phases with the first 100 units to be completed by the second quarter of 2020. The foundations have already been laid, the company said.

The individual apartments, which will be roughly 30 to 50 square metres in size, are designed for periodic occupation by offshore workers.

“Until now, the engineers, mechanics and technicians have had to commute every day from their place of residence or stay in nearby hotels,” Borkum Hafen Immobilien said.

“Both the direct waterside location in the former naval harbour and the amenities in the apartments facilitate a comfortable, modern lifestyle,” it added.

A further 140 residential units are planned for the second phase, which will only be built if sufficient demand is reached for the first 100 apartments.

Borkum Hafen Immobilien authorised signatory Kai-Uwe Thase said: “Our aim is to design quarters which after hard days at work but also during periods of poor weather, offer ideal facilities for life beside the job with a kiosk, barbecue site, communal kitchens and common rooms, a fitness room, laundry areas and storage options.

“Added to this, of course, is the fact that the location is directly in the harbour, thereby offering the shortest conceivable route to the ship.”
