Acciona Energy has begun constructing a 93MW wind farm near the south east coast of Texas in Cameron County.
The San Roman wind farm has been acquired from developer Pioneer Green Energy.
It will use 31 Acciona AW125/3000 turbines. Each turbine has a rotor diameter of 125 metres which will be mounted on 87.5 metre steel towers.
Acciona’s North American chief executive Ilya Hartmann said: “The San Roman Wind Farm represents Acciona’s renewed investment activity in the important US market. Acciona is working to grow its renewable energy portfolio in the US and Canada and the San Roman project is an important step toward that goal.”
It is the eight wind farm owned by the company in the country, taking its total wind power capacity in the US to 721MW.
Acciona said the recent long-term extension of federal production tax credits was an important factor in its decision to invest further in US wind energy projects.
The new wind farm will be operational by the end of 2016.
