Acciona Energía has completed the repowering of its Tahivilla wind farm in Tarifa, replacing 98 turbines with 13 new units.
The company said the upgrade increases annual energy production by 72% while maintaining the same evacuation capacity and is now in the final commissioning phase.
Tahivilla is expected to generate 254GWh of electricity per year, avoiding around 108,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
The project is backed by a 15-year power purchase agreement with a private client, which Acciona Energía stated was key to securing long-term income stability and supporting the investment.
It also received €8.3m in funding from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan financed by the European Union NextGenerationEU.
Acciona Energía said the repowering generated more than 1,000 jobs linked to dismantling the old wind farm and constructing the new facility.
The company added that reducing the number of turbines optimises land use, improves environmental integration and extends the installation’s useful life while maximising the wind resource.
Acciona Energía stated that repowering can offer advantages over building a new wind farm, including greater social acceptance, reduced environmental impact, shorter development times and lower costs and investment risks.
