Amazon has revealed 14 new renewable energy projects in Spain, Finland, Canada and the United States, which will contribute to reaching the goal of supplying 100% of its activities with renewable energy by 2025
This is five years before the online retail giant’s initial goal.
A new project in Castilla – La Mancha will be the one with the highest capacity of those driven by Amazon to date in Spain, adding 152MW of capacity to the grid.
This power will be added to the four PV projects that the company already has in Andalusia, Extremadura and Aragon.
With the commissioning of this new solar plant, which is expected to come into operation in 2023, Amazon’s renewable energy projects in Spain will exceed 520MW of capacity.
Amazon has also announced 11 new renewable energy projects in the United States, in addition to the 43 already existing and which include the company’s first solar projects in Arkansas, Mississippi and Pennsylvania, along with other projects located in Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio.
In total, Amazon adds a capacity of more than 6GW of renewable energy in the United States, through 54 projects.
In addition, a second renewable energy project in Alberta will consist of a 375MW solar park and is expected become the largest in the country.
When it goes online in 2022, it will raise Amazon’s capacity in Canada to more than 1 million MWh.
The retail group will also carry out its first renewable energy project in Finland – a 52MW capacity wind farm located near the west coast of the country.
The project is expected to start producing power in 2022.
The new projects bring Amazon’s renewable energy capacity globally to 10GW to date.
With these new investments, Amazon becomes the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in the United States and reaffirms its position as the largest buyer globally and in Europe.
Likewise, the company advances in its commitment, The Climate Pledge, to reach zero net carbon emissions in all its operations by the year 2040, ten years before the provisions of the Paris Agreement.
The solar and wind projects will supply renewable energy to both Amazon’s corporate offices and its fulfillment centers and Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centres, which serve millions of customers around the world.
In addition, they will help fulfill Amazon’s commitment to produce the renewable energy equivalent of the electricity consumed by its customers’ Echo devices.
