US utility WEC Energy Group is to acquire a 90% interest in the over 190MW Jayhawk wind farm, which is to be built in Bourbon and Crawford counties in Kansas, from Apex Clean Energy.
WEC Energy Group’s investment is expected to total $302m for the stake and substantially all of the tax benefits.
The transaction is subject to receiving all necessary regulatory approvals, the company said.
Invenergy will acquire the remaining 10% share and will operate the facility.
Commercial operation is expected to start by the end of 2021.
Jayhawk, which will feature 70 GE turbines, will sell electricity to Facebook under a long-term deal, once operational.
WEC’s investment is part of the company’s $16bn ESG (efficiency, sustainability and growth) Progress Plan.
WEC Energy Group executive chairman Gale Klappa said: “Our commitment to the Jayhawk project is the next step forward in our comprehensive plan to build a bright, sustainable future, serve strong vibrant customers and continue to grow earnings from our portfolio of renewable energy assets.”
