BayWa acquires 350MW Scottish wind pipeline

BayWa has acquired Forsa Energy’s UK renewables business, which is made up of 350MW of onshore wind farms in Scotland.

The projects add to the 823MW of solar and 1047MW of wind the German company already has under management within the UK and Ireland.

BayWa said the move is part of its growth strategy in the UK to develop more greenfield wind projects.

The pipeline includes six wind farms totalling 200MW with planning consent already in place, with the expectation of approval for a further 150MW by 2020.

Construction is already underway at the first of these projects – the 24MW Inverclyde wind farm.

In addition, BayWa will also acquire Forsa Energy’s UK onshore wind development and construction team, which is led by renewables generation director Alasdair MacLeod.

BayWa UK managing director Gordon MacDougall said: “We are committed to Scottish renewables and the Scottish government’s onshore wind targets.

“With this investment, we plan to continue to grow and invest in subsidy free markets by identifying good wind resource opportunities.

“This acquisition will allow us to undertake more greenfield development, helping us to further expand our presence in the UK and Irish market.”

Forsa Energy chief executive Alan Baker said: “BayWa is continuing to build on the foundations the Forsa Energy UK renewable’s team has laid with the landowners, communities and other key stakeholders without whom we wouldn’t have been able to contribute to Scotland’s renewable targets.

“We wish BayWa and our former colleagues well for the future and hope to see this business become the leading independent renewable energy business in Scotland and beyond.”

Forsa Energy is backed by power-focused private equity firm Riverstone.
