Canadian outfit BluEarth Renewables has started full operations at the 29.2MW Bull Creek wind farm, the developer’s first project in Alberta.
Calgary-based Skyflo Consulting was general contractor for the distribution-connected scheme (pictured), which features 17 GE 1.7MW 103 turbines on 80-metre towers.
The wind farm has a deal to sell power to several of the province’s school boards through the Alberta Schools Commodities Purchasing Consortium.
Bull Creek was the only project built in 2015 in Alberta, whose deregulated merchant market and low power prices hinder wind farm development.
However the province in November committed to replace two-thirds of coal generation with renewable generation, which will increase installed wind energy capacity by thousands of megawatts over the next 15 years, said the Canadian Wind Energy Association.
Alberta energy minister Marg McCuaig-Boyd said: “Our government’s Climate Leadership Plan will see Alberta transition to up to 30% renewable power generation by 2030.”
