Boralex has installed a Zephir 300 lidar at its operational 10MW Port Ryerse wind farm in Ontario, Canada.
Deployment is in order to comply with IESO requirements for permanent wind measurement at from projects of 10MW or above and replaces the need for a met mast at the project site, Zephir said.
Port Ryerse comprises Siemens Gamesa 2.5MW-113 machines with 99.5-metre hub heights.
Boralex project development manager Olivier Parent said: “The cost of permanent met masts is close to the cost of a permanent met lidar but when you include the additional met mast land lease for 20 years, the mast’s visual impact and higher maintenance costs, the lidar becomes our preference.
“We chose the Zephir 300 wind lidar because of its proven strengths when operating in our Canadian environments where the atmosphere is particularly clear and sites can be high altitudes.”
