Canada added 702MW of new wind energy in 2016, bringing total installed capacity to almost 11.9GW, according to the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA).
Wind now supplies 6% of Canada’s electricity demand from 285 wind farms across the country, CanWEA said.
Some 21 projects were commissioned last year in Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia, representing about $1.5bn in investment, the industry body added.
It expects at a further 700MW to be installed in 2017, with new procurement in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
In 2016, Ontario added 413MW followed by Quebec with 249MW and Nova Scotia with 39.5MW.
CanWEA president Robert Hornung said: “Costs for wind energy have fallen dramatically over the past seven years, making wind energy one of Canada’s two most cost-competitive sources of new electricity supply.”
