More than 200 farmers and residents are preparing to inaugurate the 320MW Zeewolde Wind Farm, the largest onshore array built in the Netherlands to date.
The ceremony to officially open the community-owned wind farm will take place on 26 August, nearly three years after construction began in October 2019.
The estimated €500m repowering project, east of Almere, replaces 220 solitary turbines with 91 larger capacity machines.
These older turbines must be removed within five years of the wind farm’s completion, according to Zeewolde municipality and province of Flevoland.
Sjoerd Sieburgh Sjoerdsma, managing director of Zeewolde wind park, said: “Everyone in the area could participate financially. And more than 90% have done so. This is really a wind farm of the area.”
