Renewables operator EDP Renovaveis (EDPR) has won two wind farm contracts in an auction held by the Colombian government less than a month ago.
The 20-year contracts are for the 212MW Alpha and 280MW Beta onshore projects that EDPR is developing, both of which are expected to enter production in 2022.
The auction was carried out within the framework of the mechanism ‘Charge for Reliability’ to guarantee the security of the offer.
Under the mechanism wind farms receive remuneration for contributing to the electricity system’s stability, in addition to the electricity generated.
EDPR will now seek to secure long-term power purchase agreements with third parties to sell the electricity produced by both wind farms.
In the Colombia auction six wind projects totalling 1160MW were successful, according to the country’s energy regulatory commission CREG, out of a total allocation of just over 4GW.
Throughout the Americas, including North America, EDPR had an installed capacity of 5729MW at the end of 2018.
