Enel Green Power’s 140MW Nxuba wind farm in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province has started commercial operation.
The €200m wind farm is has a 20-year power supply agreement with the South African energy utility Eskom, as part of the South African government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) tender.
Nxuba was one of five projects awarded in the fourth round REIPPPP tender held in April 2015.
Enel Green Power CEO Salvatore Bernabei said: “This important milestone confirms EGP’s commitment to South Africa and cements our position as the leading renewable Independent Power Producer in the country.
“We are continuing to make investments to further diversify the generation mix while promoting a sustainable and inclusive energy transition, creating shared value for our stakeholders.”
With the Nxuba wind farm now online, Enel Green Power now has eight operational projects in the country, for an overall installed capacity exceeding 650MW.
In the Eastern Cape province, these include the 88MW Nojoli and 111MW Gibson Bay wind farms and the 10MW Upington and 82.5MW Adams solar plants in the Northern Cape.
