Enercon has installed a E-126 EP3 turbine on a prototype modular steel tower at Scharndorf in Austria, according to the country’s wind energy association.
The prototype will test the tower, which aims to reduce the number of transports needed to build a wind farm by 75%, said Enercon sales manager for Austria Paul Dyck.

The modular steel tower comprises folded steel elements, rather than conventional steel pipe segments.
The folded steel is screwed together at the construction site to the individual tower sections and stacked, the association said.
As well as saving time on installation, the tower will also save on costs, Enercon said.
