Eon is partnering with GE to repower the 258MW Panther Creek 1 and 2 wind farms in West Texas.
The 142.5MW Panther Creek 1 project came online in September 2008 and consists of 95 GE 1.5MW turbines, while Panther Creek 2 has been operating since December 2008 and comprises 77 of the same hardware.
Eon said the repowering will include the replacement of a “significant portion of the components, effectively increasing the annual production”.
GE will carry out the work as part of the equipment delivery contract and is expected to complete the job in the third quarter of 2019.
Eon Climate & Renewables chief operating officer, North America Silvia Ortin said: “We’re excited to embark on our first repowering project in the US.
“The repowering of our Panther Creek wind farms provides us with the opportunity to increase lifetime earnings from the sites. In addition, it allows us to capture up-to-date turbine efficiency improvements and a resulting increase in power generation.”
GE onshore wind business Americas general manager Vikas Anand said: “GE and Eon worked collaboratively to develop a repower strategy for Panther Creek that will extend the life of the wind farms, and materially increase the AEP of the existing turbines.
“The two-fold benefit of repower will ensure that renewable energy is available to Eon’s customers for years to come.”
