Gamesa has secured from DEWI-OCC type certification for its G114-2.5MW turbine.
The new G114 unit comes with a longer blade and increases nominal capacity to 2.5MW, enabling it to produce 29% more power than the G97-2.0MW, while lowering the cost of energy by 10%.
The first prototype, located in Alaiz (Navarra, Spain), began to generate power in June of this year.
To date, the company has already secured orders for the supply of 280MW of this new model to wind farms being developed in Sweden, Belgium, the UK and Turkey.
Gamesa chief technology officer José Antonio Malumbres said: “The G114-2.5MW is Gamesa’s first 2.5MW turbine and it belongs to a new generation of 2.0-2.5MW turbines which is changing the wind power cost paradigm.
“A sizeable team of Gamesa engineers has been involved in developing this entire new product range, which builds on the track record implied by the existing 2.0MW platform’s millions of operating hours and has entailed an extensive component and sub-system validation programme.”
