German company Max Bogl is claiming to have the tallest wind turbines in the world operating after the commissioning of GE hardware at a power plant combined with hydro near Stuttgart in Germany.
The Gaildorf pilot project comprises four 3.4-137 machines with hubs heights of 155 to 178 metres, which will each generate 10 gigwatt-hours of electricity a year.
The pumped hydro element – supplied under a separate agreement between Max Bogl, Naturspeicher and Voith – sees water held in the turbine bases and released when required to power a 16MW generator 200 metres downhill.
Max Bogl Wind chief executive Josef Knitl said: “We are proud to able to make an important step towards the success of the energy turnaround and to reduce CO2 emissions with this milestone.”
