The Scottish government has given consent today for the construction of the 72.6MW Creag Riabhach wind farm in the Highlands.
The 22-turbine project will be located on the Altnaharra Estate, near Lairg, in the North Highlands, and provide £9m in community benefits.
The Highland Council was consulted on the application and raised no objection.
Tip heights are set at 125 metres and hardware of up to 3.3MW will feature.
The wind farm is proposed by a joint venture of the Altnaharra Estate and Aberdeen developer Ron Shanks.
Energy Minister Paul Wheelhouse said: “This proposal for Creag Riabhach received popular support from the local community council and public alike and, once operational, will generate enough electricity to power 36,000 homes.”
Creag Riabhach wind farm director Tim Philpot said: “We welcome the decision by Scottish ministers to consent Creag Riabhach … not only will [it] generate up to 72.6MW of clean, renewable energy, but it will also give the communities of the North Highlands region a lasting legacy benefit of £700,000 rthough the Estate’s Altnaharra Foundation.”
