Construction at Energia’s 15MW Gortfinbar wind farm in Northern Ireland has been halted after masked gunmen threatened workers on the Tyrone site.
According to the Ulster Herald newspaper the NI Police are investigating the incident that occurred last Thursday.
The newspaper is reporting that two men wearing balaclavas – one of whom was armed – drove into the site compound and ordered employees from contractor Alexander Civil Engineering to vacate the site within 24 hours.
It’s also reported that a local landowner, on whose site the project is being developed, was also threatened by the masked men.
The Ulster Herald reports that Alexander Civil Engineering removed some of its machinery and temporary buildings on Friday.
Local Sinn Fein councillor Sean Donnelly told the newspaper the incident was “totally unacceptable”, adding: “It’s not clear whether they were paramilitaries or bully boys. People are asking why after wind farms going up for 15-20 years around the area, why is this happening now?”
