Provincial utility Hydro-Québec has delayed by a year a request for proposals for a 6MW wind project in the Îles-de-la-Madeleine.
The deadline for bids has been extended to April 2017. The regional energy board requested the postponement to allow it to find a new wind farm site after discovering environmental concerns with the original location.
The islands, which lie 225km offshore in the Gulf of St Lawrence, are not interconnected to the mainland transmission network and rely on diesel power for electricity.
Hydro-Québec is looking for a proponent that will develop, build and operate the wind farm under a 20-year electricity supply contract, in partnership with the local community.
The utility is looking for the lowest combined cost of energy and integration to the island grid. If the overall cost of the best offer is less than Hydro-Québec’s production cost, the utility will award a contract to the winning bidder, subject to approval by the Quebec Energy Board.
