Iberdrola has begun turbine assembly at three wind farms in Asturias, Spain following the completions of civils work.
The installation of 2.62MW Siemens Gamesa SG114 turbines is underway at the 37MW Cordel-Vidural project, between the municipalities of Navia, Valdés and Villayón, 34MW Capiechamartín between Tineo and Valdés, and 21MW Panondres between Villayón and Valdés.
A fourth project, the 36MW Verdigueiro, will begin construction between Tineo and Villayón once the developer receives the final permits.
In total an investment of more than 100 million euros will be made in the new projects, which total 130 MW and will triple Iberdrola’s capacity in Asturias.
In order to reach the wind farm locations, the components – towers, nacelles and blades – are being transported along narrow single-access roads with steep slopes and curves of up to almost 180º.
At 800 metres above sea level, and in an area known for changeable weather conditions, the construction work has required detailed planning to support the arrival of up to 200 deliveries per day, Iberdrola said.
The blades are 56 metres long, the nacelles weigh 126 tonnes and the towers are between 80 and 93 metres high.
Iberdrola said the projects were among the most complex wind infrastructure projects currently being delivered in Spain.
Construction will generate up to 1,000 jobs, the company added.
