Spanish company Ingeteam has launched a new power conversion system that aims to boost the performance of fixed-speed wind turbines.
The Ingecon Wind Fix2Var Speed system (pictured) increases annual energy production, lifetime and grid-performance of fixed-speed units by enabling them to transform to variable-speed machines to match wind conditions, the company said.
The new converter has been validated on Ingeteam’s full load test bench and is ready for commercialisation, it added.
Ingeteam said the technology extends asset lifetime by smoothing speed changes, reducing mechanical torque steps caused by wind gusts, as well as by minimising transients due to start-ups, emergency stops and grid variations.
The company added that grid compliance is ensured by the system removing flicker effects and low frequency harmonics generated by the capacitor banks and enabling power factor regulation.
