The Israeli ministries of energy, defense and finance together with the country’s Electricity Authority have signed a framework agreement that will allow the development of wind farms in northern Israel.
The ministries said they would jointly fund technological development at a cost of ILS250m (€65m) to enable construction, while maintaining security needs.
No details were given on the potential size of the wind farm developments.
Defense Ministry director general Udi Adam said: “The Ministry of Defense sees great importance in promoting renewable energy projects.
“From an enabling perspective, we invested considerable resources in promoting the agreement and together with the IDF we agreed to take calculated risks, to enable its implementation.
“The technological response we formulated creates the right balance between security needs and energy and environmental protection needs. We welcome the agreement and work to implement it.”
Ministry of Energy director general Udi Adiri said: “The Ministry of Energy is working to promote renewable energy in Israel.
“The agreement represents a significant milestone on the way to achieving the goals set by the Minister of Energy Yuval Steinitz towards 2030.
“Wind energy will join the solar and natural gas to create a clean, Israeli-based electricity economy.”
Israel is aiming to have 20% of its electricity from clean power by 2030.
