The 300MW Kingfisher wind project in central Oklahoma has started commercial operations, according to Florida-based Gulf Power.
US investment outfit First Reserve bought Kingfisher from developer Apex Clean Energy in early 2015.
Apex oversaw construction and will operate the $452m wind farm.
Vestas supplied 149 V100 2MW turbines and will provide service for 10 years.
Gulf Power has a 20-year power purchase agreement for 178MW of the output, which will contribute about 5% of its projected energy mix, said spokesperson Rick DelaHaya.
“Wind power is an integral part of our diverse renewable energy portfolio, which will include 120MW of solar energy by the end of the year,” said DelaHaya.
“And the best part of these new renewable energy projects is that they are cost effective for customers – it’s cost-effective renewable energy that diversifies our power supply.”
