Blade manufacturer LM Wind Power is expanding a plant in Quebec to serve wind projects in the US market.
The C$12m retrofit will include additional production space, new equipment and workforce training at the factory in the Gaspé region.
The Quebec government in Canada is kicking in C$5.7m, including a C$4.3m loan and a C$1.4m grant.
The expansion is expected to create 265 jobs by 2018, boosting the total workforce to 450 and making LM Wind the largest private employer in the region.
Future production is destined for the US, Quebec energy minister Pierre Arcand said at a funding announcement.
“This is a first in Quebec,” he said. “With this investment, LM Wind Power Canada will become the largest supplier of wind turbine components in Quebec and will export 100% of its production”.
GE bought the Danish blade manufacturer in 2016 in a €1.5bn deal that’s expected to close in the first half of this year.
