A major bog slide at a wind farm in the north-west of Ireland has been stabilised, according to investigators.
Donegal County Council and a cross-border group of state and regulatory agencies said emergency work to mitigate further slides and the impact of the initial one at the Meenbog project have been completed.
Local roads at the wind farm, which is being developed by Invis Energy, have also been reopened following the incident that occurred last month. Construction of the project, which was underway, has now been halted.
Donegal County Council said the focus of investigators is turning to finding out why the “serious pollution event” for the Mourne Beg river occurred, as well as “enforcement and restoration”.
Two separate groups have been set up to coordinate the ongoing probe.
“Officials from Donegal County Council, and other agencies involved in the working group, have inspected the site of the wind farm development on an ongoing basis since becoming aware of the peat slide,” added a statement.
“During these inspections the only works that were witnessed as ongoing on site were those that were related to the emergency works necessary to prevent further bog slides or mitigate the impacts of the initial bog slide.”
