German mining outfit and power producer Mitteldeutsche Braunkohlengesellschaft (MIBRAG) has submitted a permit application for the construction of the Breunsdorf wind project, south of Leipzig.
The application was submitted in accordance with the Federal Emission Control Act.
In the run-up, the project was presented and discussed with the municipality of Neukieritzsch and the city of Groitzsch in a series of public dialogue events.
Following public feedback events with the municipality of Neukieritzsch and the city of Groitzsch, MIBRAG reduced the number of wind turbines for the permit application from the original 17 to 15.
The project will use 6MW turbines which will provide the wind farm with a capacity of 90MW and MIBRAG is investing €100m in the project.
The reduced number of turbines increases the distance of the wind farm from residential developments.
MIBRAG commercial director Kai Steinbach said the Breunsdorf wind farm will be fed into the grid but there are also plans to use the electricity to produce green hydrogen.
“The refinement of electricity from renewables into hydrogen, methanol and green fuels is part of our MIBRAG im Revier (EMIR) renewal project.
“We see a rapid increase in demand for these product groups in the coming years,” Steinbach said.
Once approval has been granted, the construction phase will begin as early as the third quarter of 2023.
