Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) Networks connected 299MW of renewable energy capacity to the grid last year, surpassing 1GW of cumulative connections.
The company said the milestone was hit in December, with renewable energy now providing more than 25% of Northern Ireland’s total electricity consumption.
It connected 160MW of large-scale generation as well as 60MW of small installations and 79MW of micro-generation.
NIE Networks, which owns the power transmission and distribution network, said a further 670MW are committed to be connected by 2020.
During 2016 the company invested £101.4m on its networks, or 15% more than in the previous year. It reported an operating profit of £91.7m, £0.6m less than in 2015.
