Nexans has developed a new aluminum cable for in-turbine wiring that is about 40% lighter than traditional copper ones.
The low voltage loop cabling system is cheaper, more flexible and easier to install than the current alternatives, the company said.
The cable, available for connections up to 1kV, forms a loop in the nacelle so that it can withstand the torsion that arises due to rotation.
It will be manufactured at two Nexans factories in France and Germany.
Nexans WIND OEM global product manager Philippe Michel said: “Nexans set out to reduce the cost of low voltage loop cables while maintaining the performance needed by wind turbine generators.”
“Our new low voltage aluminum loop solution, the first of its kind on the market, meets these criteria.”
