Renewables provided 44% of Northern Ireland’s electricity consumption in the 12 months to June 2019, an all-time record for the six counties.
Figures from the Department for the Economy show that green sources were up 7% for the year compared to the same period in 2017-18.
The 44% tally, which represents 7.8 gigawatt-hours, is the first time renewables have breached the 40% barrier and is the “highest rolling 12 month proportion on record”, according to analysis of the figures.
Wind provided 85% of the total, although non-wind renewables sources have also increased fivefold in the last five years.
Irish Wind Energy Association chief executive David Connolly said: “This is a fantastic achievement and a real sign of the progress we are making in cutting CO2 emissions in the energy sector.”
