Ontario regulators have given the green light to a 100MW wind project by joint venture partners Samsung Renewable Energy and Pattern Development.
The province has granted a renewable energy approval (REA) for construction of 36 Siemens SWT-3.2MW-113 turbines with a 99.5m hub height.
The North Kent 1 project is the fifth and final wind farm in Samsung’s 1069MW feed-in tariff wind power portfolio in Ontario.
The project holds a 20-year power purchase agreement with the provincial Independent Electricity System Operator.
Construction is slated to begin this summer with commercial operation expected to start in fall 2017.
The North Kent 1 scheme is expected to generate about $250,000 in annual property taxes and pay $4m to a community benefit fund.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent will have the option to acquire a 15% equity interest in the project.
The proponents hope to build a second phase at the site. The 100MW North Kent 2 project was not selected in Ontario’s 565MW large renewable procurement program however another call is expected later this year.
