Nordic developer OX2 has acquired the project rights to the 400MW Lestijarvi wind farm in Finland from YIT for an undisclosed price.
The project, which is the largest onshore wind farm in the country and located in Lestijarvi municipality in Central Ostrobothnia, will feature up to 72 turbines with heights of 240 metres when constructed.
Construction is due to start within a year and the wind farm will be built without government subsidies.
Annual energy production will be approximately 1.4 terrawatt-hours, which corresponds to approximately 2% of the total electricity production in Finland.
Plans and building permits for Lestijarvi are legally in force, OX2 said.
In addition to the 72 turbines, the project includes the construction of a new electricity substation and 55km of 400kV power lines for electricity transmission.
OX2 Finland country manager Teemu Loikkanen said: “The acquisition of the project rights for Finland’s largest wind farm is a significant and welcome project for us.
“The greatest benefits from renewable energy projects are achieved when they are implemented on a large scale.
“In addition to the wind farm, we will build a 1300MW electricity transmission line, and with the nearby Halsua wind power project, we will be able to offer plenty of job opportunities for companies in the economic area.”
Lestijarvi municipality head Esko Ahonen said: “It is of paramount importance to the municipality that the project has passed on to competent hands and its realisation is confirmed.
“The wind farm generates approximately €2.5m in real estate tax for the municipality every year – approximately €3500 per citizen.
“It will secure funding for the new school and provide us with capital for development and maintain well-being in our municipality.”
