Russian coal producer East Mining Company, the Corporation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic and the Sakhalin regional government have signed an agreement to cooperate on an over 67MW wind farm on Russia’s Sakhalin island.
The 67.2MW project is planned for the Uglegorsky district and will comprise 16 turbines.
The signatories said two potential sites for the installation of turbines have been identified.
In order to confirm the potential of the regions, special wind monitoring will be carried out, they added.
East Mining Company will start work on the project next year, with commercial operations expected by the end of 2024.
It will cost about RUB8.5bn (€98m) to build.
East Mining Company general director Maksim Kuzemchenko said: “Uglegorsk wind farm is one of the key elements of the strategy of long-term responsible development that we have adopted.”
Electricity generate will power an under-construction coal transport conveyor and a fleet of dump trucks converted to electric traction.
