RWE to repower two German wind farms

RWE starts consultations on 36MW Welsh wind farm

In the coming weeks RWE and its partner companies will be working to repower two wind farms in Germany.

The work comprises dismantling 17 older turbines and then replacing them with 11 new, more powerful machines.

With this repowering at its sites in Lesse and Barbecke, the company will increase capacity from 30.6MW to 61.8MW.

In Lesse, RWE will replace 11 turbines of the oldest generation of hardware (total output 19.8MW) with eight modern units with a total output of 44.7MW.

In Barbecke, RWE will replace six existing plants (total capacity 10.8MW) with three machines with a nominal output of 5.7MW each (total output 17.1MW).

The team has started setting up the construction site and initial road work.

RWE Renewables Europe & Australia chief executive Katja Wünschel said: “43,500 is the number of the day.

“After commissioning, the wind farms will be able to supply 43,500 households with green electricity for one year.

“Electricity production will be more than tripled at both sites. In this way, repowering makes an important contribution to the success of the energy transition.

“It’s not just the climate that benefits: We voluntarily pay out the RWE climate bonus of 0.2 cents per kilowatt hour produced to the local communities.

“The city of Salzgitter as well as the municipalities of Lengede, Burgdorf and Söhlde can look forward to annual revenues of up to €280,000 in total, which will be distributed among the municipalities.”
