Scottish onshore wind output jumped 36% in September compared with a year earlier and for two days created enough power to meet all of the country’s electricity needs.
WWF Scotland said the new monthly data was “astonishing” and has urged Holyrood to expand the “renewables revolution” to heat and transport sectors.
According to the figures, wind turbines produced over 766,000 megawatt-hours of electricity. This is enough to power 87% of the homes in Scotland, it calculated.
WWF Scotland director Lang Banks said: “September was an astonishing month for wind power, with output up more than a third compared to the same period last year.
He added: “That Scotland has made such great strides in generating renewable power and addressing climate change is the result of many years of political and public support.
“However, if we are to continue to play a leading role globally in cutting carbon emissions, we need politicians to build on our renewable electricity revolution and expand it to other sectors such as heat and transport.”
