Siemens Gamesa has secured a 312MW order in Brazil from independent power producer AES for its next generation turbine platform.
The Tucano wind farm will be located in the state of Bahia and is scheduled for commissioning in 2021.
The agreement, for 52 SG 5.8-170 turbines, is the first for the 5.X platform in the country, taking total orders for the turbine model close to 600MW, in Europe and Latin America.
The turbines will operate at up to 6.2MW. Siemens Gamesa will upgrade its nacelle factory in Camacari to produce the turbines locally.
Recently the manufacturer secured orders to supply both the 155 and the 170-meter rotor variants of the platform in Sweden.
According to Siemens Gamesa the 5.x platform has the highest power rating for a geared onshore turbine and the largest rotor available in the market, boosting annual energy production (AEP).
Siemens Gamesa onshore business chief executive Alfonso Faubel said: “Over the last decade, Siemens Gamesa has shown an unmatched commitment towards the Brazilian market, bringing its latest technologies and investing heavily in localising production and creating jobs.
“We are happy to build on that history and see the footprint of our Siemens Gamesa 5.X expanding globally, demonstrating its adaptability to all markets.”
Siemens Gamesa will use its “strong supply chain” as well as adapt the Camacari plant in Bahia to locally produce the turbines.
The factory was recently expanded to produce converters as well.
Siemens Gamesa sources towers and blades locally and has its SG 3.4-132 certified by BNDES FINAME, which allows buyers to access competitive financing from the federal development bank.
