Siemens newbie cuts the noise

Siemens has unveiled the SWT-3.3-130LN turbine, which operates at a reduced rotor speed and offers less noise than previous comparable models.

The German giant said aerocoustic optimisations of the B63 blades allow silent operation of the SWT-3.3-130LN.

The turbine is also equipped with the upgraded DinoTail system, which also helps reduce noise levels.

Siemens said the SWT-3.3-130LN therefore operates at a noise level of 104.9 decibels, a reduction of almost two decibels compared with the SWT-3.3-130 model.

The new unit has annual energy production of 11GWh at wind speeds of 6.5 metres per second and 16GWh at wind speeds of 8.5 metres per second, the company said.

It added that the new turbine will be in serial production in early 2017.

Siemens has also equipped the DinoTail system to the SWT-3.6-130 and SWT-3.15-142 turbines, which the company unveiled at WindEnergy 2016 today.

The SWT-3.15-142 is designed for low wind conditions and has a rotor diameter of 142 metres, with the blades based on hybrid-carbon technology developed by LM Wind Power.

The machine is able to generate 10GWh a year at wind speeds of six metres per second, Siemens said.

The SWT-3.6-130 will also go into serial production in early 2017, while the SWT-3.15-142 will be available later that year, the company said.
