Renewable power purchaser Smartest Energy will issue the UK’s first labels that tell companies the source and carbon content of the clean electricity they buy.
Smartest will issue the energy labels today to 500 companies including Saint-Gobain UK, Willmott Dixon and the University of London, it said.
The labels trace every megawatt used to its source of origin, allowing companies to report an exact carbon footprint and their contribution to UK climate targets.
They aim to boost the renewables industry and provide increased confidence to business consumers, Smartest Energy said.
The labels were developed in response to demand from companies for greater transparency about where the electricity they use comes from.
“For a while now, business customers have been calling for increased transparency around renewables to help them make the decision to switch that much easier,” SmartestEnergy chief executive Robert Groves said.
“We call on other suppliers to provide the same level of clarity that we give our customers to help drive the renewables market and enable businesses to buy clean energy with confidence.”
