Spain is planning to launch its second auction for renewable energy before the end of the year.
Clean energy technologies will compete with each other in the tender, the energy ministry said without giving more details.
The auction will follow an initial 700MW one in January that surprised the industry after the winners of the 500MW allocated to onshore wind chose not to earn subsidies. Many companies bid asking for no state support in order to win.
The industry is hoping for an improved auction of up to 2GW of capacity.
Spain also awarded 450MW of wind capacity in the Canary Islands this year as part of an effort to meet its 2020 European targets.
The energy ministry expects the share of renewables in Spain’s energy consumption to range from 18.5% to 19% by 2020.
Electricity from clean sources reached 50.6% of the country’s generation mix in the first half of 2016, it said.
