The Spanish government plans to launch its long-awaited second renewable energy tender on 17 May.
The energy ministry aims to support 2GW of clean energy projects through a competitive auction, Spain’s state bulletin shows. It may award up to 3GW of capacity if deemed necessary.
Bidders can express interest until 11 May.
The tender was initially set to open in the first quarter of the year offering 3GW of new capacity.
Projects will have to start operating before the end of 2019 to ensure the country hits its 2020 EU renewables target to cover 20% of energy consumption from clean sources.
The country’s first 700MW auction last January surprised the industry after the winners of the 500MW allocated to wind chose not to earn subsidies. Many companies bid asking for no state support in order to win.
