ScottishPower Renewables is planning a 60MW repowering of its 15MW Barnesmore wind farm in north-west Ireland.
The Iberdrola-owned business is eyeing up to 13 turbines at the County Donegal project where 25 Vestas V42 units rated at 600kW each have been online since 1997.
A series of public information days are planned to showcase the plans to the local community.
Detailed environmental and technical surveys will take before a planning application is submitted later this year.
The proposal was first reported by subscriber-only reNEWS earlier this month.
Chief executive Lindsay McQuade said: “As one of the first wind farms in Ireland, Barnesmore has made a pioneering contribution to the country’s renewable energy targets and low carbon objectives.
“Onshore wind is the cheapest source of renewable energy and by repowering the existing wind farm, we can substantially increase its generating capacity and output, delivering even more clean green energy to homes and businesses while supporting the Irish Government’s 70% target for renewable electricity by 2030.”
