Statkraft has fully energised the Cushaling Wind Farm and Battery Energy Storage System in County Offaly.
The co-located development combines a 55.8MW wind farm with a 20MW battery energy storage system capable of four hours’ duration, making it the first project of its kind in Ireland, according to the developer.
The wind farm features turbines reaching a tip height of 185 metres, which Statkraft said are the tallest on any wind farm in the country.
Statkraft added the battery system represents a breakthrough in grid-scale energy storage, enabling renewable electricity to be stored during periods of low demand and released during peak times to enhance grid stability and energy security.
The company said the project’s delivery reflects close collaboration between development, community engagement, construction and grid connection teams, demonstrating the role hybrid renewable schemes can play in reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
