The Strathy South wind project has progressed through consenting without any objection raised by Highland Council’s North Planning Applications Committee to proposed changes to the project.
Strathy South is located to the south of SSE Renewables’ operational Strathy North wind farm, approximately 12 km to the south of Strathy Village in Sutherland.
The application seeks to vary the existing consent to change the 39 turbines’ tip heights from 135 metres to 200 metres and increase generating capacity at the site to up to 208MW.
At a meeting last week, the committee supported the recommendation of the Highland Council planners to raise no objection, subject to the removal of four turbines.
The final decision to grant consent to the variation will now be taken by Scottish Ministers.
SSE Renewables project manager Jon Soal said: “We welcome the decision made by the Highland Council North Planning Committee today.
“It is an important step in the consent process for Strathy South and reflects the incredible levels of support from the local community over the years which has been fantastic and is hugely appreciated.
“As a responsible developer we listened carefully to people’s views to ensure that we considered local needs and priorities wherever possible.
“We are committed to delivering a significant contribution to renewable energy targets while supporting jobs and substantial investment in the economy of the Highlands.”
