Suzlon Group has installed and commissioned what it claims is the tallest wind turbine in India on a hybrid concrete tubular tower.
The S120 prototype machine stands 140 metres tall at Tirunelveli in the Tamil Nadu region.
Suzlon said the tower combines a concrete base and foundation supporting a tubular steel tower, enabling higher hub heights but avoiding increases in the weight and costs associated with all steel tubular structures.
The concrete tower, which will make low wind sites viable, was constructed onsite, it added.
The S120 builds on Suzlon’s 2.1MW platform offering an increased rotor diameter of 120 metres, the company said.
Suzlon Group chief executive JP Chalasani said: “The Indian wind energy market is evolving due to the transition to competitive bidding and it has become crucial for us to offer technologically advanced products that are best suited for sites in India and ensure higher return on investment to our customers.
“We continue to invest in R&D with an aim to develop innovative products that reduce the levelised cost of energy. We pioneered the country’s first hybrid lattice tubular tower in 2014 and now introduce the country’s tallest hybrid concrete tubular tower.”
