Four power transformers and other high-voltage equipment have been delivered to the onshore transformer station for the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm.

PGE and Orsted said the components mark a major step in building the onshore connection required to operate the 1.5GW project.

“The delivery of the power transformers, and previously also other power components, not only marks the achievement of a significant milestone in the construction process of the Baltica 2 onshore substation,” said Bartosz Fedurek, chief executive officer of PGE Baltica.

“It was also, above all, a complex logistical operation involving a ship, the ports of Gdynia and Władysławowo, tugboats, a barge, and special multi-axle wheeled vehicles capable of transporting oversized cargo.”

“From the onshore substation, we monitor and control the entire electrical infrastructure, including offshore substations and wind turbines located approximately 40 km offshore,” said Ulrik Lange, managing director of the Baltica 2 project, Orsted.

“Together with PGE, approximately 50 of our engineers planned, designed, and helped build the electrical infrastructure to ensure a reliable energy source.”

After arriving in Gdynia, the transformers were shipped to Władysławowo and transported overnight to the station in Osieki Lęborskie, with each unit weighing about 360 tons.

GE Vernova has also supplied shunt reactors, and the consortium of GE Vernova and Polimex Mostostal is equipping the 275kV and 400kV switchgear buildings.

Testing and commissioning of the onshore station are planned for 2026 and 2027, with work continuing on a 6-kilometre cable route and horizontal directional drilling to link the onshore and offshore sections.
